They aimed to climb the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales within 24 hours and raise £7,800 in sponsorship for the blood cancer charity. The team travelled to Fort William to start the challenge with Ben Nevis, before making their way down to Scafell Pike and finishing with Snowdon.
The challengers completed Ben Nevis within five hours which set the pace for the rest of the climbs. Following a six-hour bus journey, all 13 climbers were ready to begin the ascent of Scafell Pike, just as the sun started to set. The M&P mountaineers completed the Lake District mountain in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
After breakfast, they made the four-hour bus journey down to Wales before starting Snowdon with the 24-hour goal still in sight. Despite the blisters and dodgy knees, the team returned down the mountain – achieving their goal at around 11am.
Over the course of 24 hours, the mountaineers climbed 22,540 ft racking up 61km which is the equivalent of approximately 73,790 steps. Each person burned around 6000 calories and most even managed to complete the challenge in under 23 hours. Rupert Leigh (lettings negotiator, Fulham) achieved the fastest time of 21 hours 14 minutes.
Not only did the group test their physical and mental endurance while completing the challenge, but they also smashed their overall target for fundraising. Altogether, the Marsh & Parsons mountaineers have raised £8,705 for Anthony Nolan, which is enough to add 217 new potential stem-cell donors to the register.
Across the business, Marsh & Parsons employees are organising challenges, raffles, bake sales and barbecues to raise money for Anthony Nolan. Our target is to reach £25,000.
